One of the funniest and best known films featuring Neapolitan comedy legend Totò. The movie, directed in 1958 by Camillo Mastrocinque, depicts
the struggles and moral dilemmas of three men in financial difficulty, in 1950's Italy. Set against the backdrop of a country still untouched by the prosperity of the following decade is the hilarious, short-lived criminal career of a "gang of honest men". We are presented with a humorous but essentially truthful depiction of a nation split down the middle, where honest workers unwittingly line the pockets of their corrupt ruling classes; the greedy, crooked and inhumane Mr Casoria, the property manager of the tenement where the action takes place, becomes a symbol of moral decadence and institutionalised injustice. Honesty is no longer the norm, but a courageous choice that borders on economic and social martyrdom.
